Scenesters love dropping by this strip mall drinking den on the south side of Mill Avenue, as do college kids, frat cats, local musicians, or anyone looking for an alcoholic escape. What's the appeal? Cheap booze ($2.50 bottled domestics and $6 pitchers) for one, as well as plenty of cheap thrills (including numerous arcade games and pool tables), and plenty of opportunities for people-watching. It's also spacious, with a slew of comfy booths and couches where you can perch with friends while soaking up the shabby-chic dive atmosphere and earning hipster cred. • Tilted Kilt

    Tilted Kilt

    660 W. Warner Road Tempe, AZ 85284
    480-592-0102

http://www.tiltedkilt.com Complimenting a sports bar for its televisions is akin to complimenting a supermodel for her looks - it's redundant and unnecessary. To paraphrase the classic Chris Rock routine, "Sports bars are supposed to have big TVs!" That being said, the boob tubes at this popular chain's south Tempe location deserve special mention, simply because of their sheer size. We're talking an HDTV projector with a screen that literally stretches from floor to ceiling, giving a whole new meaning to the term "larger than life." Then again, that's pretty much the standard at Tilted Kilt, from the oversize pint glasses to the monstrous 10-ounce hamburger patties (yes, a double is available). And who needs pitchers when you can order a beer tube? The tubes come in 70- and 100-ounce sizes, basically providing a tap right at your table. Don't forget to bring some friends, though, because you'll need some help finishing one. In keeping with the bar's Celtic theme, the 17th of every month is deemed "St. Practice Day," with green beer and drink specials to keep you in shape for the real Saint Patty's throwdown in March. 801 E. Apache Blvd. Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-894-2662

http://www.vinetavern.com Situated just south of ASU, the Vine is a popular pitstop for the college-aged crowd before, after, or -- on occasion -- even during their classes. The atmosphere can be described as busy -- long bar, pool tables, televisions, roomy booths for you and a clown-car full of friends, and a healthy, drunken vibe. • The Woodshed

    The Woodshed

    19 W. Baseline Tempe, AZ 85283
    480-831-9663

http://thewoodshedsaz.com/woodshed1/ After 30 years in the bar business, the proprietors of the Woodshed in Tempe are experts on running a cozy neighborhood joint. This comfortable little dive with tons of personality offers a daily happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. with a slew of specials on beer and well drinks. The wood-paneled walls are covered in sports memorabilia and TVs that are tuned to movies and sports. Belly up to the bar and grab a 32-ounce beer or scoot up to one of the large tables, where you'll find room to share a basket of fried bar snacks with friends. From there, it's easy enough to find an opponent for a game of pool or chat up one of the friendly regulars. After three decades behind the bar, the owners have a few interesting stories to tell, too. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Yucca Tap Room

    Yucca Tap Room

    29 W. Southern Ave. Tempe, AZ 85282
    480-967-4777

http://www.yuccatap.com Tucked away in a grungy Tempe strip mall, this laidback dive bar evokes a small-town atmosphere with its crowd of working-class regulars. But despite its somewhat grimy appearance, the Yucca Tap is arguably one of the more popular live music joints in the PHX, and with good reason. College kids turn out in droves for Rockaroake night every Wednesday, as well as the rollicking open-mic night on Mondays. A more diverse bunch shows up for the weekly Valley Fever bluegrass and country affair every Sunday. It's even got an adjacent craft beer and premium whiskey lounge next door to the main bar, filled with a slew of top-shelf spirits, as well as arcade games and pool tables. Meanwhile, countless local rock, indie, and Americana acts have graced the elevated stage over the past decade, including the likes of Authority Zero, Miniature Tigers, The Necronauts, and Minibosses. And the best part about the place? There's never, ever a cover. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>

  • Zuma Grill & Lounge

    Zuma Grill & Lounge

    605 S. Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-829-6775

http://www.zumagrill.com Clustered near popular Mill Avenue hangouts Mill Cue Club and Fat Tuesday, the tiny Zuma Grill draws in countless college co-eds and serves as both a noshery and nightspot. Most of the day, it's a laidback lunch and dinner spot offering American pub eats. After 10 p.m., however, it becomes a den of dancing and debauchery. Things can get a bit cozy, bordering on cramped, during the weekends, often resulting in crowding out on the matchbook-sized sidewalk patio and a huge line to get in. Dressing to impress is recommended, especially if you'd like to bypass the masses. Read more about this Phoenix bar or club >>
