  • 32 Shea

    32 Shea

    10626 N. 32nd St. Phoenix, AZ 85028
602-867-7432 A standalone building in the parking lot of a strip mall on 32nd Street and Shea, the intersection from which the eatery gets its name, this cozy little breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot is the kind of restaurant where you could easily spend hours. There is a drive-thru, a patio (larger than the restaurant), and inside, a small bar, a handful of dark wood tables, and an eclectic mix of music overhead. In addition to killer coffee and cocktails, there’s a small menu of easy and affordable dishes, including a satisfying sandwich called the OMG, featuring prosciutto, mascarpone, and figs, and a light yet wonderfully creamy artichoke and spinach dip. And if you like the hazelnut spread Nutella (and who doesn’t?) owner Rebecca Golden will add it to just about anything. More >>

    8320 N. Hayden Road Scottsdale, AZ 85258
480-878-5611 Altitude Coffee Lab has become known for its roasts, but this cafe is more than that. The low-key interior is homey and relaxed, the perfect spot to spend an afternoon getting work done on the ivy-covered patio. Should you get hungry, Altitude offers full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus that include dishes from all over Europe like Spanish frittata, Danish smørrebrod, and more. For aspiring musicians and poets, weekly open mic nights on the high-end shop sound system will present your work well. Should you need liquid courage before you perform, the coffee house also offers beer, wine, and a small selection of spirits. However, you shouldn't leave without trying the Gibraltar, which mixes espresso and foamed milk at temperatures lower than a cappuccino's so you can taste the amaretto and raisin notes of Altitude's espresso blend. • Bergie

    Bergie's Coffee Roast House

    309 N. Gilbert Road Gilbert, AZ 85234
480-497-3913 Brian and Bruce Bergeson founded this cozy coffeehouse in the historic Heritage District of Gilbert in 2008. Since opening in early 2009 they've been busy not only brewing great cups of joe but also roasting their own unique blends of beans. That's right, at Bergie's you'll not only find a great place to grab a drink and relax with a book, but also a quality cup of custom roasted coffee -- courtesy of the brothers themselves. Bergie's import their raw beans from Central America, South America, Africa, and Indonesia and roasts them in small batches to ensure they always achieve the desired flavor. As with any carefully crafted product, freshness is key and that's why the folks a Bergie's promise their beans are never more than 14 days old. We love enjoying their special roasts on the spacious outdoor patio, though it's hard not to love the charming cottage that houses the whole operation. More >>

  • Bertha

    Bertha's Cafe

3134 E. Indian School Road Phoenix, AZ 85018
602-955-1022 Whether this cute breakfast and lunch cafe in Phoenix is a dessert shop with an affordable savory side or a casual eatery with a sweet twist is more a question of semantics than of taste. Courtesy of Beth Goldwater (who is married to the grandson of the late five-term Arizona senator and 1964 presidential nominee), Bertha’s serves up a tidy, affordable selection of simple and straightforward sandwiches and salads made with fresh ingredients and house made sauces. And thanks to a dessert case packed with homespun indulgences like thick chocolate brownies, decadent peanut butter cookies, and Goldwater’s signature cheesecake (one of the best in the Valley), a sweet ending -— or beginning — to your meal is just a finger point away.
