  • Bertha

    Bertha's Cafe

3134 E. Indian School Road Phoenix, AZ 85018
602-955-1022 Whether this cute breakfast and lunch cafe in Phoenix is a dessert shop with an affordable savory side or a casual eatery with a sweet twist is more a question of semantics than of taste. Courtesy of Beth Goldwater (who is married to the grandson of the late five-term Arizona senator and 1964 presidential nominee), Bertha’s serves up a tidy, affordable selection of simple and straightforward sandwiches and salads made with fresh ingredients and house made sauces. And thanks to a dessert case packed with homespun indulgences like thick chocolate brownies, decadent peanut butter cookies, and Goldwater’s signature cheesecake (one of the best in the Valley), a sweet ending -— or beginning — to your meal is just a finger point away. • Carmel

    Carmel's Coffee & Bakery

    4233 E. Camelback Phoenix, AZ 85018
480-626-0020 This Central Phoenix coffee house – located in a vintage 1940s house on Camelback Road in Arcadia – is a favorite for its warm, cozy interior, interesting artwork, and freshly brewed java (using Lux beans). But what has us returning again and again is the full menu of breakfast and lunch items. Carmel’s Coffee and Bakery does of course have classic baked goods like scones, muffins, and croissants, but it also serves omelets, open-faced tartines, breakfast burritos, classic breakfast plates with eggs and toast, sweet and savory crepes, French toast croissants with real maple syrup, and croissant sandwiches with bacon and egg. Breakfast is served all day, but lunch items like BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, mac and cheese muffins, grilled cheese, and quiche are added later in the day. When the weather permits, Carmel’s has plenty of patio space available to sit and savor your morning coffee or to recharge while enjoying a midday meal. More >>

    Daily Dose

    1928 E. Highland Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85016
602-274-0334 Daily Dose is simultaneously stylish and down-to-earth, a cheerful indie eatery from Matt and JenLyn Long, the same folks who own nearby Fusion Restaurant & Lounge. They serve accessible, affordable American comfort food with tasty, creative flourishes. Depending on the time of day, the restaurant either feels like a hip cafe (free Wi-Fi is a bonus) or a low-key lounge. Dig in to killer biscuits and gravy or decadent, fruit-laden pancakes in the morning, and sink your teeth into a hefty turkey melt later in the day. More >>
