http://www.32shea.com A standalone building in the parking lot of a strip mall on 32nd Street and Shea, the intersection from which the eatery gets its name, this cozy little breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot is the kind of restaurant where you could easily spend hours. There is a drive-thru, a patio (larger than the restaurant), and inside, a small bar, a handful of dark wood tables, and an eclectic mix of music overhead. In addition to killer coffee and cocktails, there’s a small menu of easy and affordable dishes, including a satisfying sandwich called the OMG, featuring prosciutto, mascarpone, and figs, and a light yet wonderfully creamy artichoke and spinach dip. And if you like the hazelnut spread Nutella (and who doesn’t?) owner Rebecca Golden will add it to just about anything. More >>
http://www.elevatecoffee.com In West Phoenix you might find the pickings a little slim as far as locally-owned coffee shops go, which is why people are especially grateful to have Elevate Coffee House in the neighborhood. The coffee house and lunch spot offers breakfast eats (think classic morning meals such as bagels, oatmeal, and a croissant sandwich) as well as lunch and dinner. Nosh on their Southwest Turkey sandwich or a Raspberry Turkey Havarti wrap before indulging in a sweet crepe for dessert. If you're feeling particularly international you could also opt for a savory crepe such as the Elevate Club, a turkey, ham and roast beef crepe that proves French fare doesn't have to be light. As far as drinks go they have a nearly endless selection of hot and cold coffee and espresso beverages as well as frappes, frozen cremes, smoothies and italián sodas. You can cuddle up comfortably in one of their cozy nooks knowing 10 cents from each cup of Joe served at Elevate goes to providing safe water for children in Africa. More >>
http://www.fiddlersdream.org This all-volunteer, all-acoustic Westside music café just celebrated its 26th anniversary, and remains Phoenix’s only smoke-free, alcohol-free small performance venue. Widely known for hosting local and national musical acts, Fiddler’s Dream is also renowned for its unusual open-stage policy: Following most Friday and Saturday night shows, any act is offered 10 minutes (or three songs) onstage. A long list of music festivals, live acoustic concerts and national touring acts keeps this place hopping on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, when the friendly staff also serves up coffee, tea, and tasty diner food besides. There’s a real vibe here, too—squint a little, and it’s easy to pretend you’re in a North Beach bistro circa 1968, waiting for Joni Mitchell or Judy Collins or Joan Baez (or one of the other folky chick singers whose names begin with J) to perform. http://www.matadorcoffee.com In a North Phoenix strip mall you'll find freshly roasted coffee beans at Matador Coffee Roasting Company. They strive to achieve the highest quality of coffee beans and espresso drinks every day and also serve house made pastries. If you're hungry for something more they offer a menu of sandwiches and salads as well as a few breakfast items. Stop in for a cup of their hot coffee and you're guaranteed to get the kick you need to start the day, making this one of our favorite coffee shops in the entire Valley. They invite you to curl up in their comfy chairs with your favorite book or use the free Wi-Fi to knock out the last of that pesky paper. And if you're celebrating once you've got that done, they can also offer a selection of beer and wine. More >>
http://www.starbucks.com Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Phoenix and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores.
