  • Fair Trade Cafe

    Fair Trade Cafe

    1020 N. First Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85003
602-354-8150 We thought we were going back again and again to Fair Trade because they offer 75-cent refills on tea and coffee, but then we started to notice the dynamic crowd, and the cool music, and the cool-weather outdoor seating options, and we realized we were in love with everything here! Especially the strong brew, served both iced and hot, and the daily specials on fresh-roasted local beans. Don't miss the banana nut cookies, moist and tender and not too sweet, or the numerous and ever-changing vegan items on the menu. More >>

  • The Farm at South Mountain

    The Farm at South Mountain

    6106 S. 32nd St. Phoenix, AZ 85042
602-276-6360 The only thing we don't love about this amazing getaway is that it is closed during the summer, when we most want its comforting cool ambiance and tasty lunches. Its pecan tree grove provides canopies of shaded, outdoor dining; its acres of green grass lets out onto organic gardens and is home to three separate restaurants(one each for breakfast, lunch, and dinner),an art gallery, and a gift shop we can never resist. First, though, we dine on some of the fresh homegrown food (Pecan Turkey Waldorf Salad is prefect for lunch from the Farm Kitchen; the Cavatappi from Quiessence, the dinner restaurant, is a great suppertime meal) around. this verdant escape is only minutes from downtown Phoenix, but we'd gladly drive for an hour to get to it! • Femmes Fatales & Fantasies

    7013 E. Main St. Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-429-6800 Movie posters are more than just the way that Hollywood hot shots get us to spend out hard earned money on tickets. They're art and they represent the films that preserve the history of humankind of film. At least that's what some people say. At Femmes Fatales and Fantasies in Scottsdale vintage movie posters are treated with the same reverence as the most collectable baseball cards and one-of-a-kind pieces of art. This is the place to go when you want to find a poster from your favorite old school movie – which is Casablanca, right? At any given time about 200 of Mark, Sherry, and Brandy Goldberg's 1,500-poster collection are on view. Usually they start at $200-ish and can run to five figures, not a bad price for a rare poster with your favorite movie icon on it. More >>

602-300-7575 Yet another First Friday must-see, this downtown Phoenix gallery space hosts the monthly comedy show First Friday Night Live. The Firehouse stage show features local performers such as Shaikh Sammad, Anna Moncada, Dwayne Holmes, and John Luther, of the band Haymarket Squares. They create fresh skits each month and bring in guest artists from the Strange Family Circus to Mizz Luy Morals, a local burlesque dancer. The topics are always relevant and shocking, giving the whole shindig an organic feel. More >>

  • First Studio

    First Studio

    631 N. First Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85003
602-957-7760 The First Studio gallery in Downtown Phoenix represents quite an interesting piece of Arizona's history. The building was built in 1949 and served as the first television studio in Arizona, which is crazy because we can't imagine a world before HBO and infomercials. The building now houses a creative collective businesses, studio space for resident artists and exhibitions. They're showed work from ASU students and well-known local artists alike and are a favorite place to check out on First Fridays. It's a bright and beautifully painted building with an awesome mural of Wallace and Ladmo on the side. By far one of the most creative and historical spots in the city. More >>

  • Five15 Gallery

    Five15 Gallery

    515 E. Roosevelt St. Phoenix, AZ 85004
602-216-0150 Five15 Arts is located on the main drag of the Roosevelt Row arts district in Downtown Phoenix, making it a reliable location to find exhibitions from established as well as up-and-coming artists. The collective, artist-run, contemporary art space hosts monthly rotating shows from young Valley talents and is one of our favorite places to see and be seen on Third Fridays. It's one of the oldest galleries in the downtown art scene and has served as a launching pad and incubator for a number of the community's most influential artists. More >>
