  • MADE Art Boutique

    MADE Art Boutique

    922 N. Fifth St. Phoenix, AZ 85004
    602-256-6233

http://www.madephx.com This independent boutique natures handmade wares from local artists. MADE art boutique is more than just a shop though, it's also a community gathering place where Downtown residents can attend workshops and receptions. Owner Cindy Dach is a pioneer in the Roosevelt Row scene and her little boutique is a symbol of the success of the community, which the New York Times named one of the best Secret Neighborhoods in America. The constantly changing merchandise at the store means we have stop by often and snatch things quickly. It's a go-to spot for artistic inspiration in a retail setting and for original gifts even in a last minute pinch. More >>

    602-462-5516

http://www.modified.org Despite all the rumors to the contrary, Modified Arts ain't dead. While its proprietors recently decided to change the establishment's focus to more of an art gallery than a music venue (and thus, eliminate the sort of rock and indie shows that it regularly featured over the past decade), the Roosevelt Row institution will still host occasional bands and musicians, although they'll be more of an experimental or genre-challenging sort. • Monorchid

    Monorchid

    214 E. Roosevelt St. Phoenix, AZ 85004
    602-253-0339

http://www.monorchid.com Located in the Roosevelt Row arts district in Downtown Phoenix this cavernous warehouse was originally built in in 1937 by Del Webb, but has since been renovated to include an exhibition space, offices and studios, a conference room and more. It's unassuming on the outside but serves as a great example of adaptive reuse in the city's downtown core. Every inch of the 14,000 square foot space has been re-purposed – it now houses two impressive photo cycloramas. Owner Wayne Rainey is a fine-art and commercial photographer who's gathered a collection of talented local artists to act as tenants in the space. Every month the gallery also shows an exhibition by collective members as well as work by local independent artists. On any given month when we stop in during First and Third Friday, we never know what we'll find at this spot. From fashion shows to a local band, there's always cause to check out what they've got planned. More >>

  • Mood Swings Salon and Gallery

    Mood Swings Salon and Gallery

    520 S. Mill Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-968-0268

Imagine our surprise when we sat back for our 7 p.m. pedicure session at this full-service salon, only to be startled by the sound of live guitar music. We opened our eyes and saw a table with punch and cookies, then noticed the abstract oil paintings on the walls. Turns out, Mood Swings plays host to local artists. The art -- for sale, naturally -- hangs on the très chic brick walls, and every two months, on a Thursday evening, Mood Swings hosts an opening, complete with live music by a salon employee. More >>
