  • Harry Wood Gallery

    Harry Wood Gallery

School of Art Building Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-965-6163

http://art.asu.edu This Arizona State University Gallery established in 1971 was named after Emeritus Professor and former chair of the Art Department Harry Wood. The gallery serves as a venue for Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibitions, which are open to the public for one to two weeks. It's a great opportunity to catch the Phoenix area's rising stars of the artistic persuasion. The prices are reasonable and the egos are much smaller than once they've earned some props in the real world. Throughout the year the gallery also hosts annual exhibitions including the Nathan Cummings Foundation Juried Travel Exhibition, New Graduate Student Exhibition and the Juried Undergraduate Exhibition. Mood Swings Salon and Gallery

    520 S. Mill Tempe, AZ 85281
    480-968-0268

Imagine our surprise when we sat back for our 7 p.m. pedicure session at this full-service salon, only to be startled by the sound of live guitar music. We opened our eyes and saw a table with punch and cookies, then noticed the abstract oil paintings on the walls. Turns out, Mood Swings plays host to local artists. The art -- for sale, naturally -- hangs on the très chic brick walls, and every two months, on a Thursday evening, Mood Swings hosts an opening, complete with live music by a salon employee. More >>

  • Northlight Gallery

    Northlight Gallery

    Matthews Hall Tempe, AZ 85287
    480-965-3468

http://art.asu.edu/gallery/northlight/ Normally a college campus might not be the ideal place to look for world-class photo exhibitions but at the Northlight Gallery, that's just you might find. On the west side of Arizona State University's Tempe campus, this university-run gallery hosts shows more than just student work. There certainly is a lot of that, but you might also catch photo-based work from emerging, underrepresented and internationally recognized artists. Students who are taking a Photo Exhibitions course at the school may get to help run operations and more, but it's mainly under the direction of talented shutterbug Liz Allen. Shows, whether impressive or not, don't stick around this joint for long (usually between two weeks and two months) so you'll want to get a move sooner rather than later if you want to catch a glimpse. • The Paper Studio

    The Paper Studio

    520 E. Southern Ave. Tempe, AZ 85282
    480-557-5700

http://www.paperstudio.com Aside from being a scrapbook lover's dream The Paper Store in Tempe has the sort of inspiration arts and craft supplies that make even the least artistic person you know want to get elbow-deep in glitter, glue and paper. They have every type of scrapbook paper you could need to immortalize that trip to Hawaii or your dog's first birthday. Country chic? Yup. Cuddly cats? You bet. They also have all the buttons, ribbons, jewelry trays and embellishments to take your project from “alright” to “all-star.” If you need a little more than just supplies (like, knowledge, for example?) you can also sign up for one of their classes. The can teach you basics as well as more complicated skills, like letterpress. Venture in at your own risk, though, because we can't get out of there with out dropping a pretty penny on new goods. The center's gallery can open into the lobby allowing for a seamless flow from one space to the next. There's also a lake side multipurpose room, an outdoor amphitheater and two entrances to the center.
