  • McFarlane

    McFarlane

    9410 W. Hanna Drive Glendale, AZ 85305
    623-670-5601

http://www.spawn.com/store/westgate/ If you're looking for a place to buy an action figure, McFarlane, located at Westgate in Glendale, is it. That is assuming that you're not interested in child-friendly toys like My Little Pony (though they have that, too) and are interested in life-like action figures of American soldiers or a bound, blindfolded and buxom S&M version of Dorthy from The Wizard of Oz. McFarlane's takes its name from Todd McFarlane, a Canadian cartoonist, artist, writer toy designer and entrepreneur who's best known for creating the Spawn cartoon and working on Marvel's Spider-Man franchise. In addition to collectible sports figures and twisted toys from McFarlane's mind, the store carries characters from Halo and Nightmare on Elm street. More >>

    Musical Instrument Museum

    4725 E. Mayo Blvd. Phoenix, AZ 85050
    480-478-6000

http://www.themim.org This privately-funded museum located in North Scottsdale opened in April 2010 and totally delivered on the hype preceding it. It's a beautiful, open and inviting space with a contemporary Southwestern vibe and their collection of more than 15,000 instruments includes examples of musical artifacts from nearly every nation on the globe. The best part about the experience though, is that each of the displays magically senses your presence and plays appropriate audio (through wireless headphones provided by the museum) and video on flat-panel monitors. You'll hear the sounds of instruments from places the average traveler has likely never been and get a chance for some good old fashioned celebrity worship at the museum's Artist Gallery. Larger countries such as India, China and Russia boast multiple displays with subsections highlighting their different types of ethnic, folk and tribal music. And food lovers have something to look forward to as well since the MIM cafe serves up global cuisine at a pretty fair price. More >>
