http://www.fattuesdaytempe.com This New Orleans-themed drinkery located along Mill Avenue brings in college students by the dozens on Friday and Saturday nights. Some visit for the dope DJ lineup or to bump their humps on the dance floor, while most come for a taste of the bar's infamous wall of frozen daiquiris. From the "Pirates Pleasure" (Captain Morgan's and fruit punch) to old favorites like Sex on the Beach, these concoctions are distributed by model-quality bartenders from a row of silver, slushie-like machines lining the back of the bar. This south Phoenix watering hole might seem a little grubby around the edges, gringo, but after dark it becomes a pretty happening little Latin nightspot. Throngs of rancheros, vatos, and chicas from around the Valley pack themselves into this noisy joint during the weekends to play billiards on its many pool tables, and listen to norteño, sweet cumbia, and banda spun by local DJs. If they're lucky, they find some space on the crowded dance floor to bust some moves. More >>
http://www.fibbermageespub.com Owned by the same lads that operate the Skeptical Chymist, Fibbers is also a popular Irish pub of the traditional bent. Its authenticity extends beyond just having Guinness and Harps on tap and the Jameson's behind the bar, however, as the place is loaded with Celtic curiosities aplenty (from antique cigarette signs to various and sundry trinkets). It also prides itself on filling patrons with "craic," a term straight from the Emerald Isle describing an uproarious vibe, much like what you might witness on any given night when live music and ample drink specials are offered. Bonus -- there's a real chef in the kitchen, cranking out some truly top-notch cuisine. This is way better than average pub grub, with silky smoked salmon, homemade brown and soda breads, fresh grilled fish, and an incredible shepherd's pie. More >>
http://www.fiddlersdream.org This all-volunteer, all-acoustic Westside music café just celebrated its 26th anniversary, and remains Phoenix’s only smoke-free, alcohol-free small performance venue. Widely known for hosting local and national musical acts, Fiddler’s Dream is also renowned for its unusual open-stage policy: Following most Friday and Saturday night shows, any act is offered 10 minutes (or three songs) onstage. A long list of music festivals, live acoustic concerts and national touring acts keeps this place hopping on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, when the friendly staff also serves up coffee, tea, and tasty diner food besides. There’s a real vibe here, too—squint a little, and it’s easy to pretend you’re in a North Beach bistro circa 1968, waiting for Joni Mitchell or Judy Collins or Joan Baez (or one of the other folky chick singers whose names begin with J) to perform. http://www.flickasbajacantina.com Walk into Flicka's and you just might mistake the place for some beachside cantina in Cabo San Lucas instead of a roadside cantina in south Scottsdale. The lively wooden outdoor patio caters to laid-back lovers of Mexican beer, and chips and salsa. Inside, there is a bit more of a Scottsdale flair -- barstools covered in velvet leopard print, DJs and live bands entertaining the drunken masses, and a couple bars stocked with everything from apple-tinis to margaritas. http://www.fortmcdowellcasino.com With 23 different games of keno running every five minutes (including the super-competitive Speed Keno, where guests play 100 games for ten cents apiece, all at once—really!), it’s no wonder this is every small-time gambler’s favorite haunt. Fort McDowell Casino’s state-of-the-art bingo hall is a player's paradise, what with its spacious smoking and non-smoking areas, speedy tableside food service and free beverages while you play. Prefer pinochle? The luxurious Card Room offers no-limit poker tournaments every day at noon and each night at 7, with tableside bar service and a prize pool for the top 10 winners. Twenty-four hour, Vegas-style blackjack and enough slot machines to choke a mule (775 of them, to be exact) means more games for you—and a greater likelihood that you’ll join this popular Scottsdale casino’s Winner’s Circle. http://www.facebook.com/funnyworldphoenix If you haven't attended a show at this tiny gallery and music venue housed in a ramshackle CenPho residence, better get a move on. That's because in all likelihood, Funny World probably won’t exist by the time that summer rolls around. It's owner, the curiously named Space Alien Donald, claims that the property is slated to be scooped up and razed by the City of Phoenix in the spring to make way for a parking lot. In the meantime, however, local musicians, bands, and spoken word artists have been filling Funny World's short lifespan with plenty of gigs. Art rockers, funky folk guitarists, and various purveyors of weird sounds typically perform in the living room in front of a Babar bed sheet covering the windows while the audience sits of thrift store sofas or cops a squat on the floor. In between sets, they gather in the kitchen to drink coffee or watch the owner bust out with some raps and rhymes while dressed in costume. Sounds like just another funny night at Funny World.
