http://www.handlebarj.com Cowpokes and country music fans have been moseying into this honky-tonk hideout since the 1960s, back when Waylon Jennings was a regular and patrons rode up on horseback. While the surrounding North Scottsdale neighborhood may have become a little more upscale in the ensuing decades, things have stayed pretty much the same at this saloon and steakhouse about 15 minutes north of Old Town. Handlebar-J’s sprawling bar still beckons boot-scooters and broncobusters, while cowboy hats still line the rafters, and both porterhouses and beefy burgers still sizzle in the kitchen. Grab your boots and take a swing on the enormous dance floor where twangy tunes are provided by the Herndon Brothers Band, fronted by Nashville recording artist Ray Herndon, most nights a week. Or if boot-scootin' ain't your saddlebag, pardner, sample some of the barbecue drenched in homemade sauce or amble on out to the patio and taste your tallboy in the great outdoors. Shucks, you might even wind up drinking next to a celebrity. Crooners like Lyle Lovett, Kris Kristofferson, and Vince Gill have all stopped by in the past. More >>
http://www.haroldscorral.com There's cowboy fare at lunch and dinner, and great daily "all you can eat" specials, but this place also serves a hearty all-American breakfast. The pièce de résistance: the ranch-hand omelet calzone, a three-egg beauty stuffed with ground beef, spinach, mushrooms, and cheese, enfolded in pizza dough and baked. Bring a friend, and share. http://www.hausmurphys.com More charm per square foot than just about any place in the Valley, with portraits of King Ludwig II, embroidered tablecloths, lederhosen hanging from the ceiling, and dirndl-clad waitresses carrying 32-ounce schooners of dark, German dunkel. Usually lit up like a fir tree at Christmastime, HM's got biergartens out back, oompah music on tap, and nearly every schnitzel known to man on the menu. Wurst-case scenario at a spot like this? Pigging out on piles of savory sausages, Liebling. Not exactly gustatory Götterdämmerung, eh? More >>
Nestled in the heart of Avondale, Henry Jack's has been in the same place, with the same name, since 1935. A big club with the feel of a neighborhood bar, it offers a mix of both worlds. Day drinkers take over the place when the sun is shining, sucking down domestic pints and whittling away the hours with games of pool. Come nightfall, however, a sexy crowd enjoys hip-hop, Top 40, old school, and dance music from local DJs, as well as performances by Latin bands every other Sunday. Henry Jack's may be one of the only nightspots in town that has a suggestion box. More >>
http://www.thehollywoodalley.com It's been more than two decades since Hollywood Alley swung open its doors to the public, and since those late-80s days, the iconic club's stage has hosted sessions by some of the biggest names in the Valley's recent rock history. From gigs by punk legends the Sun City Girls back in the day, to the bands of the early-90s Mill Avenue scene like the Gin Blossoms, up to such modern-day scenesters as the Glass Heroes. The music may have changed over the years, but the decor definitely hasn't (countless classic movie posters and countless band stickers still cover the walls). More >>
