    The Western

    6830 E. 5th Ave. Scottsdale, AZ 85251
    480-947-3585

http://www.thewesternaz.com Located on a stretch of Fifth Avenue near Indian School Road, the sleek little country music joint perched at the edge of Old Town comes courtesy of Tucker Woodbury (The Vig bars and The Little Woody tavern in East Phoenix) and Stateside Presents promoter Charlie Levy. A kind of honky-tonk version of the Crescent Ballroom, the downtown music venue opened by the duo in 2011, The Western features local and national acts as well as booze and grub in a rustic yet refined setting that keeps its cool without ever going the way of flashier joints in the Valley. Saddle up for boot-scootin’ music and good booze, but steer clear of the cowboy-style chow — you’ve had better elsewhere. More >>

    Whiskey River Saloon

    602-867-2802

http://www.whiskeyriversaloon.com It's all about the Wild West here, only much more civilized. The walls are painted in colorful desert landscape and sunset murals, and the hardwood dance floor leaves plenty of room for two-steppin'. Weekends are the busiest, as hordes of good ol' boys in cowboy hats and plaid shirts gather around the bar to talk over drinks. More >>

    The Woodshed

    19 W. Baseline Tempe, AZ 85283
    480-831-9663

After 30 years in the bar business, the proprietors of the Woodshed in Tempe are experts on running a cozy neighborhood joint. This comfortable little dive with tons of personality offers a daily happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. with a slew of specials on beer and well drinks. The wood-paneled walls are covered in sports memorabilia and TVs that are tuned to movies and sports. Belly up to the bar and grab a 32-ounce beer or scoot up to one of the large tables, where you'll find room to share a basket of fried bar snacks with friends. From there, it's easy enough to find an opponent for a game of pool or chat up one of the friendly regulars. After three decades behind the bar, the owners have a few interesting stories to tell, too. More >>

  • Wrigley Mansion

    Wrigley Mansion

    2501 E. Telawa Trail Phoenix, AZ 85016
    602-955-4079

http://www.wrigleymansionclub.com Chewing gum -- and the man most closely identified with the sticky-sweet stuff, William Wrigley Jr. -- built this lovely, 1930s-vintage manse that overlooks the area surrounding the Arizona Biltmore from atop a patrician, 100-foot bluff; the palatial digs were a golden-wedding-anniversary present from WW to his wife, Ada. Prepackaged meat by-product keeps the place going, though, in the form of Geordie Hormel, the so-called "Son of Spam," who's turned the facility into a private club and formal eatery. More >>
