  • Aguila Golf Course

    Aguila Golf Course

    8440 S. 35th Ave. Laveen, AZ 85339
    602-237-9601

http://www.phoenix.gov/recreation/rec/facilities/golf/golfcourses/aguila/ Not only is Aguila the newest, fanciest municipal golf course in Phoenix, it's incredibly cheap. You can walk the course for $16 (or $12 after 11 a.m.) or rent a cart for $27 (or $23 after 11 a.m.). Designed by Gary Panks, Aguila has an 18-hole championship course and a nine-hole par 3 course. Located on what used to be the Alvord family farm, the course has some of the prettiest views you'll find on a municipal court — South Mountain and the Estrella Mountains in two directions and the Phoenix skyline in another. Golf addicts in town call it the best-kept secret in affordable golf. There's a full-service pro shop on-site and, if you get hungry, the Eagle's Nest Café is open from sunrise to sunset. More >>

http://www.coyotesice.com Located in north Scottsdale, The Ice Den is a 150,000-square-foot ice skating and entertainment center and home of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes Hockey club. The facility oped in June 1998 and is a world-class ice facility that serves as a community gathering place as well as a space for nearly all the NHL teams looking to satisfy their practice needs. Of course that means the Ice Den is a haven for hockey players young and old, but it's also a the well-known skating venue for national and international figure skating events, shows and competitions. The Ice Den's additional amenities include a Mountainside Fitness Platinum Center, the Over East breakfast diner, Divalicious women's clothing boutique, the Chilly Bean Cafe and the 18 Degree Neighborhood Bar and Grill – and great place to grab a drink while the kids perfect their slap-shot. • Altitude Aerials and Dance Co.

    402 W. Monroe St. Phoenix, AZ 85003
    480-202-7511

http://www.altitudeaerials.com In addition to being a serious art form, circus acrobatics has become a trendy way to stay fit, and in downtown Phoenix, this total-body practice is made accessible for both athletes and fitness newbies alike. Class levels start with beginner aerial yoga, practiced in a safe, comfortable hammock to encourage development of basic strength, flexibility, and spatial awareness. To get a feel for flight, introductory series in acrobatics help students get comfortable on performance apparatuses like silks, rope, and trapeze. And, for those who dream of running away to join a traveling circus show — dancing high above the cheering crowd, suspended on a spinning metal hoop — Altitude offers higher-level instruction to fine-tune acrobatic technique and learn daring mid-air drops. Director Nicole Crist has a background in jazz and modern dance and first took to the sky in 2005, studying with top performers in NYC. She returned to Phoenix last year to bring aerial acrobatics to Arizona and teach, collaborate, and choreograph this exciting movement art in her safe, supportive studio. More >>

  • AMF Christown Lanes

    AMF Christown Lanes

1919 W. Bethany Home Road Phoenix, AZ 85015
    602-249-1715

http://www.amf.com From its retro angular roof to its neon lights, Christown Lanes looks like a throwback to bowling's 1950s heyday. But once inside, the 48 shining synthetic lanes designed to enhance the "hook and spin" bowler's game boldly proclaim that Christown is still at the forefront of the Valley's bowling renaissance. The ultra-clean alley sports new carpet, spotless restrooms, and a snack bar. Even better: non-smoking lanes. But there is also plenty of room for getting rowdy at the pool tables in The Legends nightclub featuring karaoke on Friday nights. The lanes host regional Professional Bowlers Association tournaments and the popular Strike Force Tour, and have leagues for kids to seniors. It's rock 'n' roll time on Friday and Saturday at 10:30 p.m. when black lights and strobes enshroud the lanes for Extreme Bowling ($14 for two and a half hours, including shoes). Reservations are recommended. More >>

    AMF Scottsdale Lanes

    7300 E. Thomas Road Scottsdale, AZ 85251
    480-946-5308

http://www.amf.com Although many Valley alleys have been lowering their lights and blowing out their loudspeakers with Steppenwolf or Meat Loaf classics for years, this south Scottsdale bowl-a-rama strikes 'em all down with a chic clientele packing the lanes on Fridays and Saturdays for $15 (or Sundays through Thursdays for $12). Music videos from such artists as Pink, and The Vines (but, oddly enough, not Bowling for Soup), and psychedelic light shows are projected onto two gigantic screens over the alleyways while punky skate bettys fling glowing balls alongside spiky-haired gym rats quaffing pitchers of Amber Bock, and clubwear-clad Scottsdale fembots smoking Parliament Lights. Sure, you could save a few bucks by throwing gutter balls with Flo and Jethro out in Apache Junction, but why miss out on this kind of fun? More >>
