Even the most die-hard country fans often fail to realize the influence and importance of the Carter Family. Considered the first family of country music, the Carters were instrumental in bringing country music to a wider audience, including a young Johnny Cash. Their mixture of vocal harmonies over acoustic rhythms set the stage for numerous artists in many genres and overtly influenced Cash’s songwriting style. Cash also married in — taking June Carter for his wife and singing partner. The Musical Instrument Museum’s ongoing “Carter Family & Johnny Cash” exhibit links these artists with rare photos, concert footage, instruments and stage-worn clothing.

Go country at the Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 East Mayo Boulevard. Admission is $20 for adults. Visit www.themim.org or call 480-478-6000.
