Open mic nights are kinda like karaoke for musicians. Granted, the word “musician” covers a multitude of sins. As it pertains to open mic, typically it might be interpreted as “one who clamors anxiously to perform for a room full of people who are clamoring to perform.” So naturally, no one cares about how is actually performing. It’s like a weird, ironic vortex of disinterestedness. But not on Walt Richardson’s watch. The iconic Valley musician — no air quotes necessary — hosts Walk-in Wednesdays at Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 West Rio Salado Parkway. Aside from taking place in a unique venue, the weekly open mic’s host is one of the most respected gigging musicians in town. Check it out on February 11 from 5 to 10 p.m. Visit www.tempe.gov or call 480-350-2829 for details.
