Yup, time to talk about Neil Simon again. After decades of comedies rendered anathema by bad amateur productions, the playwright created a series of autobiographical shows that are funny, less-overexposed tours de force. One of the best, part of what’s known as the Eugene trilogy, continues through Sunday, August 10, at Scottsdale’s Desert Stages Theatre. Biloxi Blues follows a group of young soldiers in basic training in Missisippi in 1943.
The film starred Matthew Broderick and was directed by Mike Nichols, so it’s safe to conclude the script has chops of some kind. And the character Eugene, an aspiring writer, is more of an observer in this plot than in the plays that bookend it, and that’s kind of a good thing. Get your boot camp on at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, at 4720 North Scottsdale Road. Tickets are $22 to $25 at www.desertstages.org or 480-483-1664.
