Tempe artist revels in the pleasures of the flesh

By Wynter Holden

Meaty Subjects

Remember that student in high school who boycotted science class on the day of the fetal-pig dissection? If you were that kid, or are a member of PETA, you might have mixed feelings about Tempe artist Brent Adrian’s “Poetics of Dissection” exhibit and its hyper-realistic oil paintings of roasted duck breasts, dead octopuses, and jars of discarded tissue. Though meat seems an odd inspiration, Adrian says he’s the latest in a long line of artists, such as Rembrandt, to use dead animal flesh as still life. “I decided to start painting meat as a subject because it seemed like a really rich source of beautiful forms, textures, and colors,” he explains. Plus, it guarantees he’ll never be a starving artist.

Catch Adrian at the free opening reception for his solo show from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, September 11.
