Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is a Southwestern original, from her early ranch life to bucking partisan expectations in the highest court of the land. The generations-spanning exhibition “The Cowgirl Who Became A Justice” opens Tuesday, September 2.
Young Sandra Day spent much of her youth at her Irish-American family’s Lazy B Ranch near Duncan a small town just west of Arizona’s eastern border. The resilience and perseverance in the future justice’s demeanor is evident from early challenges like learning to drive at the age of 7 all the way to becoming the nation’s first woman on the Supreme Court.
“The Cowgirl Who Became A Justice: Sandra Day O’Connor” will be on view at the McClelland Irish Library at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 North Central Avenue, through May 2015. Admission is $10 for adults. Visit www.azirish.org or call 602-258-0109 for more info.By Jose Gonzalez
