The Roots of Rap

Legendary rhymer posts up at Herberger

By Steve Jansen

The Roots of Rap

Hey, hipsters. We hear you’re now on some ancient hip-hop kick and are out at Tempe’s Gracie’s Thrift digging through the boxes of cassette tapes trying to score some Kurtis Blow and The Sugar Hill Gang. Well, we’re a little hesitant to share this with you, but if you really want to pretend to be all into the roots of rap, then cruise down to Herberger Theater Center, 222 East Monroe Street, and check out Umar Bin Hassan. The legendary spoken-word artist of The Last Poets – arguably the first rap group ever – will be spitting his rhymes bred during the Civil Rights era on Monday, November 16. The performance, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m., will also feature singer/songwriter Kevin Sandbloom as well as a gaggle of local creative types, such as The Klute and Aaron Johnson.
