Back in the day, this darkly lighted tavern and nightspot in south Scottsdale was known as The Atomic Cafe, and often served as home to mascara-wearing, dyed-hair-sporting goths, who writhed away to bands like N17. A decade and a name change later, the joint is still playing host to the same kooky crowd, except this time they’re listening to such heavy hitters from the local hard rock scene as A Few Random Drunks, Slowmobile, and Franko Ditty Danko. Metalheads from across the Valley -- and even the nearby Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community -- come to head-bang and thrash about in the pit that inevitably forms on the black-and-white-tiled dance floor. A sign on one wall offers “hearing protection” for only $1. Believe us, you’ll need it.
