Durant's

2611 N. Central Ave.
(Central and Virginia aves.)
Phoenix, AZ 85004
602-264-5967
Website
The first and last word in old-school cool. For more than half a century, the house Jack Durant built has served up class by the barrelful as well as classics like sautéed chicken livers, oysters Rockefeller, lamb chops with mint jelly, and Delmonico steaks, to name a few. Serious fressers can eat their way to a plaque on the wall by polishing off Durant’s 48-ounce porterhouse, and you get to do so in leather booths that once hosted Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and Robert Mitchum, among other luminaries. Walking through the kitchen to the dining room is an experience in and of itself. And the bar crowd is lively and entertaining. A pricey joint at times, but worth every penny.

The Inside Word on Durant's

  • FrecklesAZ
Durant's is part of Phoenix's "witness relocation era" past. Just up the street is the (still standing) former "penthouse" Phoenix Bunny Club (only ask the old timers--Phx newbies have NO idea). The same building housed a club on the ground floor where a 60's era newspaperman was blown up in his car for (reputedly) investigating a story on the local mafia--that bar has since relocated across the street to the Park Central Mall (the first mall in Phx). Anyhow, Durant's walls are covered with plush red wallpaper and the entire restaurant is always decorated with beautiful large life floral arrangements, to include the ladies room. The ladies room is teeny tiny but immaculate. There are two entrances to the restaurant, one is off Central, the main street (NO one comes in that way unless they walked to the bar or took the NEW city trolley); and the other is through the kitchen because the parking is out back. The two best signs to look for in a restaurant is the cleanliness of the kitchen and the bathroom--I've always found both to be above par. The bartenders are pros and learn/know the names of not only the regulars but also the "somewhat" regulars/seasonals. Some of the employees have been with the restaurant for decades. The place is known for their oysters and steaks, but I tell you what--their chicken livers are delicious. The servers, like the bartenders, are professionals as well and ensure diners' experiences are unparalleled. The original owner, now past for maybe a decade?, set a standard which has been maintained.

This place has great service and quality food. One of the better restaurants in the south west with out a doubt!
