Carrying on the tradition of the much ballyhooed and now-closed Long Wong's on Mill Avenue, the new-ish Long Wong's at the Firehouse has big shoes to fill. The proprietors of the updated version of the venerated Tempe bar and restaurant are hoping to pick up where their predecessors left off. So far, so good. The joint features lots of music (in the form of open mic sessions and nightly shows by local rock, folk, and indie artists) and the famous wings you'll find at other Valley eateries bearing the Long Wong's name. This spot has a certain funky charm, with the walls covered with an eclectic collection of retro concert and movie posters, old license plates, and more than 200 vintage album covers. The patrons are a similarly colorful mix of college students, barflies, and wing-lovers, many of whom get to the place via the nearby light-rail station. A fire station is also down the street, which proves beneficial to drinkers, because whenever a siren blares, anything at the bar is only a buck. Don't try calling 911 from the parking lot, though -- they're on to that.
