Tar Heel home cookin’ featuring North Carolina-style barbecue, hush puppies, collard greens, chitlins, red beans and rice, red Kool-Aid to wash it down with, and Nutty Buddy pie for dessert. Phoenix is blessed with several fine soul food establishments, but none that flies the flag of the Old North State like proprietor and ´cue-maker extraordinaire George Miller, who originally hails from Faison, N.C., the pickle capital of the Southeast. Generally, Miller serves what’s called “western-style” N.C. barbecue, which is sweet and tomatoey, but if you ask him for the real deal, the vinegary, “eastern-style” stuff, he’s got that, too. Miller’s hush puppies alone will have you rooting for UNC-Chapel Hill during March Madness, they’re so dang delish.
