Tarbell's strikes the perfect balance between cozy neighborhood restaurant and refined destination. The Biltmore-area dining spot is a local standby and for good reason. Two decades after first opening this place, chef Mark Tarbell continues to craft beautiful contemporary American cuisine. The chef relies on seasonal ingredients, but not too heavily, in dishes such as a starter that features Arizona's edible treasure, burnt-orange lobster mushrooms, along with Cherokee tomatoes, and delicate baby artichokes. The housemade pasta will also make a fine dinner choice, especially when the thick noodles are dressed in a light Parmesan broth with Campari tomatoes, spinach, and hunks of chicken fennel sausage. Navigating the restaurant's extensive and award-winning wine list is no easy task; an easier but still satisfying choice is to go for one of Tarbell's cocktails. We suggest The Hive, a light bourbon drink featuring charred lemon, rosemary, and a touch of honey.
