American Standards Hosts Benefit Show for Teen Lifeline

For local hardcore band American Standards, performing isn't just about the music, it's about making an impact on the community.

Their show this Saturday, July 30 at The Fixx in Tempe is called "Hope for the Hopeless" and serves as a benefit for Teen Lifeline, a local non-profit working against teen suicide. Teen peer counselors answer calls from troubled teens, and the charity also provides education programs on teen suicide.

"We knew we wanted to do a benefit show, so we spent several weeks researching which organization we wanted to support," says singer Brandon Kellum. "The Teen Lifeline organization was a very important cause to us, partially because it is local to Arizona and has a direct impact on the communities we live in. When we came across the organization we were amazed by how many lives they've touched locally through both their suicide hotline and by employing teens as peer mentors. For the huge impact they are making, we felt their cause deserved not only any financial support we could offer, but also just an increased awareness in the community."

To support the cause, the band will be donating all profits from their CD and merchandise sales to Teen Lifeline, and proceeds from every $8 ticket purchased goes to the charity. Kellum adds the band was interested in this non-profit because all their donations go straight to teens.

Seven local bands are on the bill, including The Fair & Debonair, Darkness Before Dawn and Before You Fled. The all-ages show starts at 5:30 p.m., and more info may be found at www.facebook.com/AmericanStandards.

This is just the first of many charitable shows American Standards has in the works. In September, the band says they plan on setting up shows in Tucson and Flagstaff, benefiting charities within those communities, too.

"From the origination of our band, all five of us had a similar mindset of showing that anyone could make an impact," Kellum says. "It is important for us to show that you don't have to fit a certain style musically or otherwise or be famous by any means to make a difference in the lives of those around you. Hopefully it will inspire other bands and individuals to do the same."
