The Deftones rocked an absolutely packed house at The Marquee Theatre last night, treating Valley rock fans to one of the best shows of the year.

From the opening notes of "Diamond Eyes" singer Chino Moreno took command of the room with one of his outstanding vocals and energy. "Rocket Skates" followed as fans screamed the lyrics, "guns, razors, knifes," in synchronicity with Moreno.

The Deftones hold the distinction of being a heavy rock band that draws as many ladies as dudes; the Marquee was filled with both, a pretty even ratio packed in like sardines.

Sonically it was one of the most impressive shows the Marquee has ever held, the thick riffs of guitarist Stephen Carpenter blasting through the speakers during "Be Quiet and Drive." The set list really covered the spectrum of the bands entire catalog, including their latest release Koi No Yokan, including "Poltergeist" and "Swerve City." Older tracks like "Engine No. 9" and "Digital Bath" have aged well, still captivating the audience and sounding fresh.

There is nothing like seeing your favorite bands in intimate setting, but it was so packed it was hard to get through either entrance. Chino dedicated "Riviere" to former bassist Chi Cheng, involved in a car crash in 2008 that put him in a coma and leading the band to replace him with Sergio Vega.

Moreno handled all of the vocal duties on "Passenger," and really nailed the parts sang on the record by Maynard James Keenan of Tool. They ended the show with "Bored", "Root," and "7 Words," from their 1995 debut Adrenaline.

Whereas many of their alt-metal peers have burned out or sank into the "where are they now" mire, The Deftones have only gotten better with age, and their intriguing blend of atmospheric pop and crunchy metal has proven its staying power.
