When we first got word of the Arizona Hip Hop Festival last year, we gawked.
Organizer JustUs Samuel's vision for a massive showcase featuring almost 100 hip-hop performers from around the state of Arizona was, in a word, ambitious. But after a full day of music that took over Comerica Theatre last year for one day in October, reviewer Mike Bogumil wrote the following:
"The culture is back." This is what one of the people introducing MCs on the outside stage at the Arizona Hip Hop Festival at Comerica Theatre got the crowd chanting. I have no idea what the previous culture of Arizona hip-hop was, so I couldn't tell if you if anything made a return, but Saturday night did feel like a distinct moment. MCs spitting bars, DJs spinning, fans watching, nodding their heads and throwing their hands up while kids in the background played games on some old Nintendos hooked up to flat-screen TVs as a guy in camo pants and some friends did capoeira. This year, Samuel has expanded the scope of the festival. We count more than 125 artists alone, which means there are somehow even more performers lined up for this year's festival than last year's. So here's the lineup or this year's showcase, officially going under the wordy title of "Power 98.3 Fm x Respect The Underground and Young Arizona Present The Arizona Hip Hop Festival 2015." The festival takes place Saturday, November 14, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
