Flier of the Week: Shelby James and the Crying Shames at Long Wong's
When it came to crafting the flier for their show this Saturday, June 12 at Long Wong's in Tempe, maybe Shelby James and the Crying Shames should have insisted on putting it together themselves. Instead, they're stuck with the attractive piece of work above.
And no, the man behind the monstrosity wasn't someone looking to bring the band down--the designer was none other than talent booker Jack Maverik, who just so happens to be friends with James, who he's known since 2003.
"When it came to booking Shelby at the new Long Wong's and his first time there, I wanted to make sure he looked really sharp," Maverik says. "So I found a sweet band photo of some weird Danish band in really sweet suits and decided that is how he should present himself to the public."
Don't worry: James is actually quite the hunk, and the band looks nothing like the one on the flier--though maybe it'd be cool if they rocked some bright pink get-ups themselves at the show.
"He didn't really have a choice in the matter, and I really don't think he even knows it exists," Maverik says. "I also don't know if he'd be happy if he knew it existed, but it made me laugh at 4 a.m. when I made it."
Who knows if the Americana band is going to forgive Maverik, but maybe the fact that Long Wong's offers one of the most fun drink specials in town will help. Whenever a fire truck with its lights on passes the bar, Long Wong's doles out $1 Fire Drills--you-call-it's of any type of liquor for only $1.
The free all-ages show starts at 9 p.m. For more info, see www.longwongstempe.com.
