Future Shock: Horns up, Metallica is coming
By Martin Cizmar
Some cool new shows announced this week, including Metallica with Austin’s The Sword and former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo’s band Down, who will bustle the shit out of your hedgerow.
Metallica Tuesday, Oct. 21
Metallica released a new album this week (see earlier blog item) so they’ll be out supporting that. The Rick Rubin-produced Death Magnetic has been hailed by some as a return to the band’s thrashy pre-Sandman glory days and by others as another weak effort by a band that should’ve broken up 22 years ago when it’s beloved bassist died. Decide for yourself on Oct. 21.
Random band fact: Metallica has seven Grammy awards. Not among them is the 1989 award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental which, of course, went to flute-powered prog-rockers Jethro Tull.
Metallica with Down and The Sword., Tuesday, Oct. 21, 7 p.m., $55.50-$75.50. Jobing.com Arena, 9400 W. Maryland Ave., Glendale, 623-772-3200.
Here’s a video from the very end of Metallica’s glory days. At the end, if you watch closely, there’s rumored to be a split-second image of Fonzie jumping over a shark.
The Faint Saturday, Nov. 1
Also announced: Dance-punkers The Faint will bring their dark, sexy sound to The Marquee on Nov. 1. The Omaha outfit is supporting their fifth album Fasciinatiion which came out last month. Who knows how the band will sound this time around, but you’ll almost assuredly be surrounded by pale girls with short black bangs and a love for herky-jerky dance moves, so the price of admission is well worth it.
Random band fact: The Faint was originally known as Norman Bailer and included Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes.
The Faint: Saturday, Nov. 1, 7 p.m., $18-$20. Marquee Theatre, 730 N. Mill Ave., Tempe, 480-829-0707.
Here’s the video for The Faint’s new single, “The Geeks were Right.”
