Harry and the Potters to Bring Punky Wizard Rock to Burton Barr Central Library on June 10
Harry and the Potters at the Tucson Public Library
My favorite people watching moment at Phoenix Comicon had to be spotting a crew of teens dressed as Hogwarts students smoking outside of the Convention Center. I liked to imagine I had found the "bad kids" of the school, looking bad-ass in their school uniforms, puffing away with magical indifference.
The Norwood, MA, based band Harry and the Potters, was formed by brothers Paul and Joe DeGeorge in 2006, basing all of their songs on the popular Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling. The music is pretty punk rock -- with a liberal dose of twee sensibility -- and the band has a totally D.I.Y. ethic: touring clubs, bookstores and libraries, launching the wizard-rock genre, and putting out 10 albums since the band's inception.
Not quite the bad-kids out front smoking, but still pretty hardcore.
The band hits the Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave., on June 10, as part of the library's "Hogwarts: The Summer Session," and the concert is scheduled to take place after the library's hours, starting at 6 p.m. and wizard-rocking until 8 p.m..
The band's music is pretty fun, though I don't know if I could sit through a whole concert of the stuff. It's all a bit too cute for me.
Then again, I'm a real loser and haven't read a single Harry Potter book and have only seen some of the films --and out of order, at that, so I'm probably not the target wizard-rock audience member.
You can listen to the group's latest album, Live at the New York Public Library, below.
