When glam metal exploded on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip in the early 1980s it was one of the most important cultural happenings in the last 50 years. Quiet Riot had kicked down the door for bands the likes of Motley Crüe, Poison, Cinderella, Ratt and -- of course -- Guns 'N Roses to, in effect, rule the world.

Men who wore makeup, silk scarves and leather, skin-tight leopard print pants -- complete with crispy, blonde hair teased to unbelievable heights -- were all of the sudden gods among men. The Sunset Strip had turned into a 24-hour carnival of all things glam, and all was right in the world.

By the late 1980s -- as quickly as the genre had become the norm -- glam metal was dying a slow, painful death. The genre had become watered down with the likes of Warrant, Bulletboys, Trixter and Stryper, bands with devilishly handsome lead singers, blatantly sexually suggestive lyrics and as much edge as a Richard Scarry book. No band had quite the glam metal profile in the late 1980s as New York's Winger, lead by overall good-looking man Kip Winger. "Seventeen" was the band's opus, a magisterial aural journey that both raised glam metal's profile and effectively put the nail in the genre's coffin.

Perhaps you admittedly have a soft spot for "Seventeen" -- lamenting the fact that you've never seen the band perform it live. Well you are in luck, friend, as Kip and the boys will be performing this September at Tempe's Club Red. Joining Winger are just announced shows from !!!, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, fun. and Average White Band.
