Switch (2603 N. Central Ave., 602-264-2295, a four-minute walk north from the station)
Drink: Caipirinha. The $6.50 drink is part of a two-for-one deal during happy hour, which is Monday through Friday, 4 to 6:30.
Scene: Well, the capirinha didn't blow us away, but at two for the price of one, we ain't complaining too much. You might be better off ordering the sangria or margarita, which shares the same two-for-one deal. Switch is the kind of dimly lit semi-swanky joint that attempts to evoke a big-city feel. For that, we can be grateful in a town that's short on this kind of place. The happy hour crowd is in an interesting one: equal parts gays, grandmas, boomer couples, and office chicks looking to blow off steam after sitting behind a desk all day in one of Central Avenue office high-rises. Lots of cocktails, respectable wine list, some beers and a full menu of appetizers and entrees. A cozy little patio out back is the secret weapon of Switch. It should be noted that right next door is that bastion of old-school Phoenixness known as Durant's. -- Jay Bennett
