Done right, an open mic night can entertain patrons and introduce a new artist to music fans. Most big names in the music business started somewhere, and for plenty of musicians, it was thanks to a neighborhood bar or music venue hosting an open mic night.

Whether you're looking to try out some new songs or discover Phoenix's next big thing, here’s a list of open mic nights hosted around town. Consider it a weekly guide for budding musicians, curious patrons, or those trying to avoid 'em.

Monday

Joe's Grotto

For the ultimate relaxed atmosphere, Joe's Grotto hosts an acoustic open mic session every Monday night. The 21-and-over set can get in without a cover and order $3 Heineken bottles all night. Sign-up begins at 7:30 p.m., and the music starts at 8.

Yucca Tap Room

Hosted by Jason Messer, the open mic night sessions at Yucca Tap Room run every Monday night from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Sign-up starts at 8 p.m., and there are drink specials all night.

Kimmyz Tatum Point

Every Tuesday, Kimmyz Sports Bar & Grill up at Tatum Point hosts an open mic jam starting at 7 p.m. There will be rock, blues, country, and solo acoustic sessions. FYI: Amps, drums, and a P.A. are usually provided.

Mill Avenue's Irish-themed staple hosts a weekly open jam session every Tuesday starting at 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday

Tempe Center for the Arts

Neighboring Tempe Town Lake, the Tempe Center for the Arts offers Walk-In Wednesdays – an open mic night offered to local musicians and poets. Microphones, music stands, and a P.A. system are provided, and there's no cover charge. Sign up is at 5:45 p.m., and performers go from 6 to 10 p.m.

Terroir Wine Pub

Around since 1997, the Talebu Coffee & Wine Café offers wine, coffee, and open mic opportunities every Friday at 7 p.m. Sign-up starts at 6 p.m., and it’s first-come, first-served. Musicians are asked to perform in 15-minute intervals, or three songs total.
