Reckless Kelly at Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill, 2/24/12
Reckless Kelly Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill Friday, February 24, 2012
Friday night took the record for the most double-fisting I've ever seen. Packing beers, the crowd seemed restless, up on their feet and screaming even before Reckless Kelly took the stage.
As soon as the Austin-based band did take the stage, drinks went straight in the air. Tunes took off, and soon most everyone was adding some dancing into the drinking routine.
Starting things off on an interesting note, drummer Jay Nazz tossed one of his drum sticks to the side and replaced it with a maraca. Nazz continued playing the drums with stick in one hand and a maraca in the other. I started laughing, and the guy standing next to me kept yelling, "What the hell did he just do?"
Rather than lead vocals and guitar shining throughout the night, the whole band caressed the crowd. The fiddle could not stop getting my attention. The lyrics told stories that anyone could relate to, and fittingly enough, and the crowd sang along and harmonized with the band.
The music was fine, but there was one problem: Male to female ratio was skewed. There were definitely more guys there than girls, and while that didn't take away from the show at all, it filled my night with random drunk guys hitting on me, asking why I had an X on each of my hands, because they wanted to buy me a drink.
The best opening line I got last night? Try this on for size: "I just got a divorce . . . Do you wanna dance?"
"Oh sorry, my dates over there," I replied, gesturing off without even looking.
Stepping away from that everyone was having a great time including Reckless Kelly. Once they played their first song they hit it off with the crowd.
Reckless Kelly goes to Los Angeles for their next show on Saturday, February 25 and all vocalist and fiddle player Cody Braun could say was, "Dang, Arizona, we should probably stay here."
They'd be welcome, too. I'm sure at least a few of the crowd members could love a chance to see them again. Because they ain't going to remember much this morning.
Last Night: Reckless Kelly at Toby Keith's I Love this Bar & Grill
Personal bias: Damn, I really wanted a beer.
The crowd: 20- to 30-somethings looking to pound some drinks and hear some good music.
Random notebook dump: I've got to be the only person sober here and, all right, that's 10 guys who have hit on me.
Overheard: "Y'all want another beer?"..."Of Course!" and then a few "Yee-haws" here and there.
