Rockstar Mayhem Festival
If this year's Rockstar Mayhem Festival inspires a sense of déjà vu, it could be due to the fact that Slayer and Marilyn Manson already did the co-headlining summer tour thing just two years ago. It could also be because Rockstar seems to slap its corporate logo on so many tours these days that it's a wonder the company has the time or resources to churn out energy drinks anymore. Regardless, multi-band festival tours are often a mixed bag, and Mayhem Fest looks to be no exception. After all, how often do you get to see three legendary bands — Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, and Behemoth — share the same bill? Then again, most diehard metal fans would rather act out the lyrics to a Cannibal Corpse song ("Fucked with a Knife," anyone?) than sit through the overwrought histrionics of "melodic metalcore" bands like All That Remains, Trivium, and Bullet for My Valentine. Then there's Manson, who stopped being relevant sometime during the Clinton administration and is as out of place here as a goth kid in PE class. For his sake, we hope he's closing the show, since Slayer fans have a long-standing reputation for, ahem, "impatience."
