What do you get when you combine 42-year-old Adeena Oswald, booze, a broomstick, and her autistic 12-year-old son? Another tragic case of child abuse for Child Protective Services to (attempt) to deal with.
Oswald has a bit of a drinking problem. In fact, her 10-year-old daughter says it's not uncommon for her to get smashed and then violent -- which is apparently what happened Sunday afternoon (and Saturday afternoon).
According to court documents obtained by New Times, police were dispatched to Oswald's Mesa home after her daughter reported that her mother was drunk and abusing her and her brother ... again.
About 23 hours earlier, on Saturday afternoon, police had been called to the house over similar allegations. The kids, apparently, were allowed to remain in the home with their drunk mother.
When police got to the house on Sunday, Oswald was visibly drunk. According to the arresting officer, her eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and she reeked of booze.
Oswald began babbling about how her daughter didn't like the pants she was wearing, her speech so slurred she had to repeat herself often.
Officers then spoke with the children, who told them their mother was drunk and angry -- as she often was -- and had begun yelling at them. It got so bad the kids had to lock themselves in a bathroom to seek refuge from their irate mother, but not before Oswald was able to scratch the 10-year-old's arm while grabbing her as she ran away.
Oswald managed to gain access to the bathroom, where she continued to traumatize her two children.
The kids ran into a bedroom and each hid under a bed. But Oswald grabbed a broomstick and started hitting them with it as they sought safety.
The kids ran from the bedroom, at which point Oswald, (the 10-year-old later told police), hit her in the face with the broom handle and attempted to hit the 12-year-old.

According to the 10-year-old, because of her mother's typical drunken state, she's forced to take care of her disabled brother, often having to feed him because their mom's too hammered.
CPS -- which is catching a little heat these days -- was called to take custody of the children. It's unclear where they are now.
Oswald was booked on two counts of child abuse.
