Arizona Cardinals Give Up 28 Points in First Quarter in Loss to Vikings
The Arizona Cardinals got crushed 34-10 by the winless (until yesterday) Minnesota Vikings yesterday, which tends to happen when a team gives up 28 points in the first 13 minutes of the game.
The first quarter for the Cards couldn't have gone any worse.
After having to punt on the first two unimpressive drives, Cards' quarterback Kevin Kolb threw an interception to kick off the team's third possession. The interception set up an Adrian Peterson touchdown, giving the Vikings a 14-0 lead about five minutes into the game.
The Cards' offense returned to the field for the next series, and Kolb turned it over again -- this time by fumbling on second down. The fumble setup a Donovan McNabb rushing touchdown.
In all, the Cards had the ball six times in the first quarter, only once crossing their own 30.
Kolb would go on to only complete 21 of his 42 pass attempts for no touchdowns, two interceptions, and a pitiful QB rating of 46.9.
"It's not one person making a lot of mistakes. It's all of us making one or two mistakes. That's where details come in," Kolb told reporters after the loss.
The Cardinals ground game was equally dreadful.
Aside from a 2-yard touchdown run by Beanie Wells, the Cardinals run game was unable to find the end zone. In total, the team only mustered 77 yards on the ground.
The first quarter aside, the Cards defense wasn't as awful as it's been in previous games.
Following the 28 points the Vikings put on the board in the game's first 15 minutes, the Cards' D only allowed six points during the remaining three quarters.
The Cards will host the Pittsburgh Steelers -- the team's opponent in the 2009 Super Bowl -- next week. For more info click here.
