Arizona Diamondbacks Edge San Francisco Giants in 10 Innings to Win Series
Pinch-hitter Wil Nieves drove home Paul Goldschmidt in the top of the 10th inning today at AT&T Park in San Francisco to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 3-2 win over the Giants. The victory gave the D-backs the series win and pushed them to 5-0 in extra innings on the season.
The nip-and-tuck series featured three games that were decided in the late innings. Now, the D-backs head home Thursday for a four-game series against the National League West-leading Colorado Rockies, who knocked off the Atlanta Braves in extra innings today.
Starting pitchers Ian Kennedy and Madison Bumgarner pitched a scoreless duel until the seventh inning, when the Giants finally broke through on a Brandon Crawford double that scored Gregor Blanco. The D-backs answered in the eighth, when A.J. Pollock singled home Gerardo Parra. In the ninth, Parra singled home Didi Gregorius to make it 2-1, but closer David Hernandez coughed up a solo homer to Crawford to blow the save and make the game 2-2.
Reliever Matt Reynolds entered the game in the 10th to shut down the Giants, who came from behind Monday night for the win and again Tuesday night to tie the game in the ninth before the D-backs closed it out in the 11th.
In Thursday's home matchup, the D-backs will send Trevor Cahill (0-3) to the mound to face the Rockies' Jorge de la Rosa (2-1). First pitch is 6:40 p.m. TV: Fox Sports Arizona. Radio: KTAR 620 AM. More info: www.dbacks.com.
