LIES LIES LIES
Dwindling political prospects for Babeu: Tremendous story by Monica Alonzo on the prevaricating chameleon Paul Babeu ("The Great Exaggerator," May 17). To have practically all his distortions [catalogued in one place] is eye-popping!
After this latest exposé, he won't be re-elected sheriff, even though he has dropped out of the race in the Fourth Congressional District and entered the race for his current job.
I love the way he threw his handpicked successor, [Pinal County Chief Deputy] Steve Henry, under the bus when the Babeu for Congress campaign went belly-up. Such a self-centered prick!
Sally Steel, San Tan Valley
Yeah, if he cared . . .: The funny thing is, Steve Henry had a better chance of becoming sheriff than Babeu does at getting re-elected.
If Babeu really cared about Pinal County and wanted to keep a conservative sheriff in office, he would have, as you suggested, stepped down and let Henry run. The only [taint] Henry has is that he worked for Babeu.
Babeu is a fucking hypocrite!
John Carpenter, Casa Grande
A reprehensible act by Babeu: Paul Babeu hasn't a prayer of getting re-elected sheriff. After your story, how could any of my fellow Republicans vote for this fraud?
To fudge your [military record] is reprehensible! Good men died [in Iraq], when this fraud never came close to action; yet he trades politically on lies that he was in bloody combat. Sick!
Charlie Jonas, Phoenix
A Babeu history lesson: Let's go back a couple of years . . .
Strike one: [Pinal County Deputy] Louie Puroll staged his infamous shootout in the Vekol Valley and then very likely shot himself in his backside. Babeu bungled that criminal incident by not having the state Department of Public Safety or another [outside] agency handle the criminal investigation ("Pinalcchio," Paul Rubin, September 23, 2010). Babeu owed Louie for the press coverage until Puroll was stupid enough to make up the story about the murder threats [to New Times writer] Rubin ("Whitewash," November 25, 2010). Then Babeu had a valid reason to fire the deputy ("Puroll Fired for Lying," Valley Fever blog, January 13, 2011).
Strike two: The Maricopa [County] sheriff sent the [scathing MCSO Deputy Chief Frank] Munnell memo to Babeu for an administrative inquiry. Babeu directed the inquiry, and then he absolved [Joe Arpaio] as having no knowledge about anything his subordinates [had done], right or wrong ("Love Connection," April 14, 2011; "Arpaio Knew Nothing," Valley Fever blog, May 3, 2011, both by Ray Stern).
Strike three: Babeu blabbered that there was going to be a massive shootout in the desert within a certain time frame and, to date, that massive shootout hasn't happened.
Strike four: Babeu announced his candidacy for Congress and was willing to give up the citizens of Pinal County to "serve and protect" those of the entire state. [Then], Babeu made the mistake of [making an alleged] covert threat to his jilted boyfriend, who . . . reported it to the press ("Babeu Revealed," Special Reports, on our website).
Strike five: Babeu [flushed the guy he pushed to be the next sheriff], Steve Henry, as a candidate, withdrew from the congressional race, and re-entered the race for sheriff.
And [certain people] seem to think this is all because he's finally come out of the closet — actually he was forced out — and people are making this a "gay" issue?
[This is] not to mention [his Massachusetts] background at [the troubled] DeSisto School ("Babeu's Suspicious Past," March 8) or his poor financial acumen demonstrated in all his leadership positions.
I don't think of Babeu as gay. I think of Babeu as inept.
Tommy Collins, Phoenix
Babeu's sis pours more fuel on the fire: When Paul moved to Arizona, he changed his appearance. I was shocked when I went [there] for a visit. Paul was completely bald and had huge tribal tattoo[s] that came down both arms.
Paul always loved his body, so I was surprised that [my brother] had covered it with tattoo[s]. Something had changed in him. When we were growing up, he would borrow my makeup and hairspray and be in front of the big mirror in the main hallway. Nothing is wrong with tattoos, but, for Paul, it was odd because he always wanted his body to be perfect.
In Arizona, [Paul] started to go on white-supremacist shows. Paul was so full of anger after he left North Adams that he was a different person. [He blamed] the local [Massachusetts] newspaper for his loss for mayor. All the North Adams Transcript did was print the truth. Paul never can accept responsibility for what he does. You'd better bring up what makes him look good, or you will bring out anger in him.
Don't be afraid of that. Give it right back to him. There is nothing he can do when you are speaking the truth. Let Paul threaten you all he wants. Paul will be in trouble for all this and his threatening ways. Paul runs away from reality.
Lucy Babeu, North Adams, Massachusetts
Look for a re-invention in another state: You're right when you say that Babeu wants voters to "forget" or "forgive." But people in Pinal County will never do this. He's delusional to think they will.
It must kill this self-loving pervert to be shunned by his beloved [national] Fox News. That the right-wing pundits on Fox have dropped him speaks volumes. He's a pariah to them and to the Republican Party now.
Once he's kicked out as Pinal sheriff, he'll have to reinvent himself in still another state.
Pete Hensel, Phoenix
Yes: Is it in their genes that every Republican lies?
Roger Thiessen, Buckeye
No longer "one of us": Remember when [Babeu] said to John McCain in that border-fence political ad, "Senator, you're one of us"? Not anymore!
