Friday Night Lights Frenzy Starts This Afternoon

It's one of our favorite times of the year, and not just because of all the great food and the blessed relief that temps under 100 degrees can bring.

No, we're talking about the Arizona high school football championships, and all the goofy color and pagentry that the homestretch games can provide.

This afternoon at 3 p.m., for example, Scottsdale Chapparal will take on Tucson Canyon del Oro at North Canyon High, which is up at 17th Street and Union HIlls. The two once-beaten teams are vying for the right to play for the championship in a few weeks at ASU Sun Devils Stadium,

If you don't have anything else on your plate but leftovers in a little bit, you can't go wrong by spending a few hours watching these kids battle it out on the gridiron.

Actually, a bunch of big prep games are on tap tonight also, and the entertainment value should be every bit as high as the evening game between mediocre ASU and maybe even more mediocre UCLA at the big house in Tempe. -- Paul Rubin
