Scottsdale-based company Redflex Traffic Solutions Inc. is developing a solar-powered photo enforcement camera. The company has an agreement with Tempe-based Arizona Solar Concepts to design the cameras, but both companies refuse to elaborate until the project is further along. A Redflex spokesperson says the cameras are "not roadworthy" yet...A Mesa resident is in critical condition after a weekend bicycle race in Utah. Dave Collins crashed through the back of an SUV that had stopped short in front of the riders while cycling at an estimated 35 to 45 miles per hour. Four other cyclists from Mesa's Red Mountain Brumbys bicycle club were also injured...As part of the first weekend of a DUI crackdown project called "Over the Limit, Under Arrest," Phoenix police arrested 306 people in two days for DUI. 127 arrests took place August 21, and 169 arrests took place August 22. Police will continue their Valley-wide DUI crackdown until September 7...
Human bones were found over the weekend at Fort Huachuca military base in southern Arizona. A spokeswoman for the base says soldiers discovered the remains while training on the East Range. She did not have details on the identity of the person or how long the bones had been on base, but said the Fort's Criminal Investigation Division is looking into it...A "party crew" crashed an engagement party in south Phoenix this weekend, resulting in 64 arrests. Police say party crews usually involve underage people who promote parties through text-messaging. Of the 64 arrests, 28 were for underage drinking...Federal funding to stem the nursing shortage won't help much in Arizona -- Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in the Phoenix is the only Arizona hospital scheduled to receive federal funding, and it will only get one nurse. Much federal funding is going toward the Nurse Faculty Loan Program, which most of the state's nursing schools don't participate in. Participating colleges will receive less than $100,000 each.
