Love Phoenix or Leave Phoenix
Last week we asked why Phoenicians elect to stay in this dusty desert instead of heading out into the world. Check out this first entry from Phoenician and New Times reader Angie Uyeda:
I was born at Williams Air Force Base. My dad was a mechanic and my mom was a hairdresser – she worked in a tiny place called Greta’s in Fountain Hills when there was nothing else in Fountain Hills. The first neighborhood I lived in near Power Rd & Brown was surrounded by desert, that was all I could see. I grew up camping all over northern Arizona, it’s what my family did in lieu of taking vacations.
I moved to the Pacific Northwest three years ago. I miss the desert, monsoon storms, Coffee Talk, sunsets, Coup des Tartes and the view of the Superstitions when you’re driving east on Broadway in Mesa.
Because people are so evolved here in the Northwest (didn’t you know?), they are amazed that I have anything good to say about Arizona. In conversations about where we’re from I defend the desert like I would my family. My main argument is that people from Arizona are just better-looking than the rest of the country. Except California. Some hot people come out of California. I also mention Chris Bianco, Lake Powell and First Fridays.

There are a million things I love about Arizona, too many to list in an email that I’m typing at work.
For each of those reasons there is nearly an equal number of reasons that I don’t think I’ll ever return. People treat the desert like it’s their own personal landfill. People are angrier (I blame it on the heat, it does crazy shit to your mind). Legislators have dumbass ideas like building a light rail in a sprawling city.
Anyway. I miss you. All of you, even the people that leave shit-talking comments in online news publications.
