An inmate at one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jails attacked a detention officer Monday, biting part of her ear "completely off," according to the MCSO.

The officer was doing a cell-search Monday at the Lower Buckeye Jail when 21-year-old Bobby Ruiz jumped on her back and started attacking her, according to the Sheriff's Office.

MCSO Sergeant Brandon Jones tells New Times the officer has been employed by the Sheriff's Office for only little more than a year.

She was hospitalized after the attack and was expected to undergo surgery Monday evening in an attempt to fix the damage.

We'll provide any updates on her condition or on the attack as they come along.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Ruiz was being held in the jail on an aggravated-assault charge, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Ruiz will be on a diet of bread and water for the time being, according to the MCSO.
