Nikolai Khabibulin, Former Phoenix Coyotes Goaltender, Has Court Date Set
Former Phoenix Coyotes goalie, Nikolai Khabibulin, has got himself a date -- in court, that is.
We learned today that Knabibulin's first court appearance after getting nailed for speeding through Scottsdale in his black Ferrari is scheduled April 12.
Not only do police claim Khabibulin was speeding, but they say he was a bit tipsy, too.
According to police documents, Khabibulin was caught doing 70 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone near Cheney Drive about 1 a.m. on February 8. When he was stopped, police determined he was drunk.
Khabibulin was at, or only slightly over, the legal limit of .08, police claim. He was also charged with exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 mph.
Khabibulin, an off-season Paradise Valley resident, signed a four-year, $15 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers in July but has been out for much of the season with a back injury, which might explain what he's doing in the Valley in the middle of hockey season.
The April 12 court date is only a pre-trial conference for Khabibulin, and no trial date has been set. If convicted, Khabibulin could face jail time, but our guess is that if the netsman gets himself the right lawyer, he's gonna skate.
