OxyContin Bandits Rob More Than 5,000 Pills From Phoenix Pharmacy

Phoenix police are searching for three men who robbed a CVS Pharmacy of more than 5,000 prescription pills early Thursday morning.

Police say most of the approximately 5,200 pills taken from the pharmacy were OxyContin, a powerful painkiller Rush Limbaugh was once known to eat like candy used to treat severe pain.

The three men entered the pharmacy on the 3400 block of West Glendale Avenue with handguns about 3 a.m. Thursday. Two of the men tied up employees while the other hopped the counter to the pharmacy, police say.

After gaining access to a safe through a pharmacist, police say one of the men grabbed prescription drugs with a street value of more than $100,000.

After scoring the pills, the three men left the store together.

Phoenix police Sergeant Trent Crump tells New Times that while pharmacy robberies aren't rare, they're usually committed by people in search of a drug to which they're addicted, rather than a group with the intent of reselling their haul.

"This is the first time we've seen this group in particular working together," he says. "This was a lucrative hit for these guys."

The OxyContin pills the men took were of varying milligram values, Crump says, and have a street value of between $20 and $40 each.

The rest of the pills, he says, are a mix of other painkillers and some steroid-derivative medications.

Two of the suspects are described as white men, around 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, between the ages of 20 and 30.

The other man, whom police say was casing the store the night before the robbery, is described as black, about 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, and between the ages of 25 and 30.

Phoenix police urge anyone with information about the incident or suspects to call the Phoenix Police Department Violent Crime Bureau at 602-262-6141, or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (480-TESTIGO for Spanish).
