Deputy Louie Puroll stands at the exact spot in the Vekol Valley where, he says, he was shot by a drug smuggler on April 30.

Sheriff Paul Babeu became nationally known after the Deputy Louie Puroll shooting inciden

Puroll stands about 30 yards downhill from where, he says, he was standing when an alleged dope smuggler stepped out from the brush and shot him. Right: Puroll says he struck his assailant with return fire from where this photo was taken and saw the man crumple to his right.
