Phoenix Zine Fair 2015
Thomas Paine made zines. Okay, maybe they called them "pamphlets" back then, but when you think about it, they're kind of the same thing -- handmade booklets made by someone to express their ideas.

Well, get ready to tap into your inner Thomas Paine on Friday, April 3, at 5 p.m. at Trunk Space, 1506 Grand Avenue, during Phoenix Zine Fair 2015. Come see, sell, or trade original books and zines with others who value this underappreciated art. All of the table space has already been reserved, but zine-ophiles are still welcome to share their creations by handing them out. During the last hour of the event, a select few zines will be chosen as winners and will be displayed and available for purchase during the month of April at Trunk Space. "Equal Parts"
Selves will be introspected, genders will be questioned, and some lines will probably be drawn, crossed, and erased during Frontal Lobe Community Space and Gallery's latest show, "Equal Parts." Local artists and curators Amanda Adkins and Ashley Macias called 22 artists to focus on the differences between genders and their own feelings about them. Join the likes of artists Therese Grossmeyer and Sean Deckert, Marilyn Szabo, Daniel Funkhouser, and Julio Caesar Rodarte as they look at their own identities and how we as humans separate ourselves beyond sexuality during the opening reception on Friday, April 3, from 6 to 11 p.m. at 1301 Grand Avenue, Suite 2B. Call 602-391-4016 or 602-743-1031 to schedule an appointment or view the exhibit through April 17. Visit www.facebook.com/FontalLobeCommunitySpaceAndGallery for more. Evie Carpenter
Bike Prom
We're fairly confident that if you're old enough to get into this prom, your days of dancing in a decked out high school gymnasium or hotel ballroom are behind you.
Phoenix Spokes People are throwing a Bike Prom: a night of drinking, dancing, and riding. Expect all the prom staples, from the crowning of king and queen to photo booths, complete with plenty of papier-mache and crepe paper streamers. Unlike your high school prom, the beer will (visibly) be flowing -- and with a theme like "Cyclist Chic," polyester is actually encouraged.
Grab your bike (and a partner!) for prom night: 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, at The Phoenix Ale Brewery, 3002 East Washington Street. Admission is $12 to go solo and $20 per couple. Visit www.phoenixspokespeople.org for tickets. Janessa Hilliard
Spring Mixer
It's that time of year again; time for Orange Theatre to make new friends and fund new shows with its 2015 Spring Mixer. The Big Brain Award-winning theater troupe will be hosting an evening of mixing, mingling, and making some money to produce staged productions and stationed A/C. The party will feature nosh provided by Welcome Chicken + Donuts, cocktails crafted by Phillip Titus Fauntleroy, a dance performance by Liliana Gomez, and music from local acts including The Haymarket Squares and DJ Rahsaan Bartet.
The Spring Mixer kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, at Orange Theatre, 1711 West Culver Street. Admission is $20 at the door. For all the details, visit www.facebook.com/orangetheatre or call 602-456-0684. Katie Johnson
Midnight Cowboy
Much of Andy Warhol's New York has been romanticized, glorified, captured in so many Studio 54 and Factory snapshots. But its ugliness is explored in John Schlesinger's grim look at a pair of struggling hustlers in Midnight Cowboy. Phoenix Art Museum screens the acclaimed drama at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 5. The movie's part of PAM's ongoing Trash Cinema Series, presented in conjunction with the "Andy Warhol: Portraits" exhibition, on view through Sunday, June 21, at 1625 North Central Avenue. Tickets to the screening are $5 for museum members and $10 for non-members. Visit www.phxart.org or call 602-257-1880. Becky Bartkowski
