The Midnight Society
Stuff from the early to mid-1990s is now, by definition, vintage. And since trends are cyclical, and you are old — but pop culture nostalgia is still pretty fun — downtown cinema FilmBar and local film collective Theater 13 occasionally team up to host a little thing called The Midnight Society. (Uninitiated babychildren, just Google the before-your-time Nickelodeon reference.) For the Friday, July 17, installment of the grainy-VHS-loving series, TMS presents a selection of episodes from HBO series Tales from the Crypt. New Works WESTival
In the heyday of vaudeville, they said an act would “play in Peoria” if it was mainstream and unprovocative. But that’s not true of our Peoria, where Theater Works serves up lots of surprising and thought-provoking performances, like the New Works WESTiVAL through Sunday, July 26.

On Friday, July 17, at 7:30 p.m., the festival presents ASU professor Pamela Sterling’s Blue Willow, based on Doris Gates’ award-winning novel about the 10-year-old daughter of a family of migrant workers in post-Depression California. Other works that will be performed as the festival continues include the Lorca-inspired . . . and Juliet, Robert Caisley’s play about a director who tries to cast an adolescent boy as Juliet (as Shakespeare would have done) and 3 No Trump by Cathy Dresbach, which follows the adventures of a group of bridge players. Bomba Lucha
Pyrrha Sutra, the Queen of the Blazing Bustier, has a propensity toward spectacle in her blood; her uncle Louis Crandall founded Phoenix’s storied Wild West amusement park, Legend City. In her latest outing, the flashdancer marries the beauty of burlesque, dance, and contortion from Cleodora and Dakoa O’Kane and live art from Tato Caraveo and Carlos Rivas with the brawn of a cadre of Mexican wrestlers including Skybird from El Paso, Texas, and Mini Halcon from Mexico City. Carlos Montafur and the Latin Fusion Band, with members hailing from Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, and Mexico, will keep the rhythm going all night long.

If you’re a fan of the original Point Break, you’re probably aware that the remake is set to hit theaters in December. You’re probably also wondering: Why? The plot is perfect: Keanu Reaves, as former college football star-turned FBI agent Johnny Utah, infiltrates a group of surfer adrenaline junkies led by Patrick Swayze who may or may not also be the Ex-Presidents, criminals who’ve robbed 27 banks across Los Angeles in three years. But then some fashion shows are about something a little bit more. The Brave Wings Fashion Show will bring designers from around the country, including Brave Wings Fashion Show founder Jenesis Laforcarde and Mabel Cortez, to the W Scottsdale, 7277 East Camelback Road, all to benefit Singleton Moms, which is dedicated to supporting single parents battling cancer by helping with day-to-day tasks.
