San Francisco bred Alfie Turnshek-Goins moved here last August to support his wicked smart wife, Kelly Rafferty, when she landed a gig as an Assistant Professor of Performance Studies at ASU.
On top of diversifying Phoenix with his unique sense of style, the 34-year-old currently works as the operational director and beer and wine buyer for Phoenix Public Market. If you ever have the pleasure of meeting him, you'll find that his tailored blazers, argyle socks and Draper-esque 'do are a perfect match for his old-world gentlemen demeanor, charisma, and wit.
What are you wearing right now?
Ben Sherman LS button down, Levi's 514s, argyle socks, lace up black Vans.
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
A pair of hiking/skater type pants. Super durable and comfy with
reinforced stitching. Suitable for kicking it with friends, urban
combat, or both.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Any and all of my monotone zip-up hoodies
Give us a childhood memory of you and clothes:
I was born and raised in Berkeley CA, so many of my memories tend to include lots of patchwork colors and flowing garments. Looking back, I can see that it's a little like a set from the lounge aboard the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Especially in the immediate vicinity of yoga studios.
Name five items every man should have in his closet:
A hoodie, a good everyday pair of boots and/or sneakers, favorite hat, a shotgun, and an impeccably fitted suit, with flat-front pants. No pleats. Ever.
Name an item of clothing that's best when it's vintage:
I don't have one specific item that stands out to me. When I buy vintage, I am attracted to the differing qualities of the fabrics, styles, and stitching of past eras and manufacturing technology. I am moving towards a wardrobe of clothes-that-look-like-clothes. Like from a kid's picture book or something. I find that a lot of the vintage stuff I buy is more in line with a simpler and more basic look than many modern styles.
Name an item of clothing you should NEVER buy used:
The only thing I can think of is anything that has been in prolonged contact with sweaty balls. Everything else should be good to go. Some people seem to freak out a little about hats, I guess.
What is your one piece of fashion advice for Phoenix?
Clothing that carries water in it. Like a camelbak suit or something. That, and kick-ass sunglasses. Ray-Ban aviators are the standard.
