A hardcore mountain biker friend watched with us as dancers hurl themselves about in a video of Australian dance company Chunky Move’s Connected. “No way would I try that,” says the guy who hurls himself off rock ledges and navigates boulder fields on a bike.

Yet the troupe has navigated the boulder fields of modern dance for years, pushing movements and ideas to the new edges of possibility. Its latest concept, Connected, presents dancers at times tethered to an undulating kinetic sculpture they gradually construct during the show. This multi-resource hanging sculpture flows with natural energy as the agile dancers’ movements forge organic connections real, complex, and immaterial below it.
