The concept of starving artist has been mocked, clichéd, and even substantiated, but Alwun House and the New York Foundation for the Arts are hosting a workshop on April 23, in hopes of helping local artists secure funding and avoid the stereotype.

Kim Moody, Alwun House director, will host Program Officer Eleanor Whitney from Artspire (an NYFA project), who Moody says wanted to do some "outreach to the hinterlands" by presenting ways artists can find funding, anything from locating programs to grant writing.

Whitney will be on hand to give the presentation as well as personally direct artists who pitch their projects as to the best ways to get funding.

All genres are artist, from performance to literature, visual to video, are encouraged to attend.

We have a lot of emerging strong arts here, and they [the NYFA] acknowledge that by coming here," Moody says.

Moody says that this is the first in a series of workshops designed to invigorate the downtown Phoenix art scene.

The Artspire workshop is April 23 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Artists interested in attending should contact Moody via phone, 602.253.7887, or [email protected] to register.
